MIT engineers desired to create robots that could squeeze through tight spaces and quickly alter their morphology similar to octopi. Using a foam structure in wax, they were able to create a design with a hard outer shell and a soft, pliable surface with the capability of healing. The engineers discovered that 3D printing the foam lattice structure of the robots was the best method because the printed lattice was the most amendable material.
