MBARI, Moss Landing (California)
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a private, non-profit oceanographic research center in Moss Landing, California. At MBARI, scientists and engineers work together to develop new tools and methods for studying the ocean. MBARI’s 2020 Summer internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students and educators. The program is open to international participants but one will be required to obtain a valid work visa for the US and MBARI cannot be a sponsor for this visa. While there are many bio and tech-related research projects offered this summer, the one most relevant to our class is their Bioinspired Design project led by Kakani Katija. Potential intern projects will use an integrated design, ecological, and engineering approach to either bring the laboratory into the ocean by developing tools and techniques that provide insight on how the marine organism functions within its natural environment or bring the ocean into the laboratory by conducting advanced imaging experiments on live specimens and/or developing mechanical mimics.
