News, Cross-Modal Recognition in Bees
Cross-modal recognition is a trait that all humans have. It’s when we are able to recognize an object in one sensory ability while experiencing it in another. While not many other animals have cross-modal recognition, this report by Solvi, Al-Khudhairy, and Chittka shows that bees may be capable of possessing mental images of a known object through an experiment that examines whether a bee can recognize an object in a dark room. The scientist tested several different sensory modes and interactions and found that bees do in fact recognize objects across multiple modalities with some limitations.
