Researchers created a high-contrast, high resolution camera. It had an arrayed design of micro-optical elements (MOEs) comprising multilayered aperture arrays (MAAs) and inverted microlens arrays (iMLAs) directly stacked over an image sensor. It was directly inspired by the eye structures of the paper wasp species Xenos peckii, which have hundreds of photoreceptors behind each individual eyelet. This structure gives them higher visual acuity than other compound eyes.
