Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have made recent breakthroughs towards understanding polymer self-assembly at an oil-water interface. It is thought that with a deeper understanding of this chemistry and the interactions that occur on a liquid-to-liquid basis, it can inform us on the future design of new materials with custom properties. Direct applications of this discovery may be seen in the mimicking of lipid bi-layers, which have important biological function in neural networking in the brain. A discovery like this can potentially open up the possibility for neuromorphic computing, or brain-like, computers.
