Using chiton scales on marine mollusks as bio-inspiration, researchers and manufacturers were able to create a synthetic flexible armor. More specifically, researches were inspired by the tesselate formation of small, mineralized scales arranged on the soft girdle of the shell plates of a marine mollusk species. After collaborating with these researchers, manufacturers designed and created a synthetic pliable armor using parametric computational modeling and multi-material 3D printing.
