News, Robot Squid and Robot Scallop Showcase Bio-inspired Underwater Propulsion
Before, most underwater robots use propellers to get around. Inspired by squid, researchers from Beihang University invented a “squid-like aquatic-aerial vehicle”. Squids propel themselves using water jets. Some squids have strong water jets and they can jump out of the water. They achieve controlled flight for a brief period by continuing to jet while in the air. Inspired by squid, the squid robot is powered primarily by compressed air. The fins and arms are controlled by pneumatic actuators. When the robot wants to move through the water, it release a modest amount of compressed air; The robot squid can also release the air all at once to generate enough thrust to fire itself completely out of the water.
