NYT News Article: How Suckerfish Surf Across Blue Whales Without Falling Off (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/29/science/remoras-suckerfish-whales.html)

[Dr. Flammang] has been developing an artificial suction disk inspired by the remora’s, which she hopes will eventually be able to be used to better stick cameras to whales.

Remoras are a family of fishes that can attach to other swimming organisms via an adhesive disc evolved from dorsal fin elements. It is not possible to link selective pressure for attachment to a specific host surface because all known hosts evolved before remoras themselves. Therefore, a morphologically relevant bioinspired model can be used to examine performance of hypothetical evolutionary intermediates. Using a bioinspired remora disc, we experimentally investigated the performance of increased lamellar number on shear adhesion.
