Paper, Mechanism of Xylem Stabilization Observed
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute and at Wageningen University have used genetic engineering to induce xylem formation in plant cells beyond the deep tissue where formation is typical in nature, allowing live observation of the specific mechanical process of xylem formation and stabilization. Using data obtained from this observation, researchers were able to determine a key protein complex involved in the simultaneous development of intricate microtubules over which the cellulose is then spread. The protein identified may be a great boon to genetic engineers, but there is also much to be learned from the mechanical process by which the proteins assemble their scaffold and pave their coating that might be of use in nano-scale engineering research.
