Marine Sponges are Influencing the Skyscrapers of Tomorrow
This article talks about bioinspired architecture. More specifically, it elaborates on how the design of marine sponges is influencing the next generation of skyscrapers and bridges. The skeletal structure of marine sponges is similar to the diagonal lattice architecture that was developed over 200 years ago for stability. Using 3d printers and comparing the lattice structure that currently exists and the skeletal structure of the marine sponge, researchers have discovered that the marine sponge obtains a higher strength-to-weight ratio. The marine sponge design actually increases structural strength by more than 20%. This may enable the construction of larger and taller skyscrapers in the future.
