In small doses, nitrogen can be beneficial and nutritious to coral species. However, excessive nitrogen in the coral’s local environment can do much more harm than good to the coral’s health. Scientists noticed that there were certain nitrogen-scrubbing microbes that may contribute to balancing the levels of nitrogen in some corals’ local environments, and therefore, improve their overall health. Andrew Babbin, the Doherty Assistant Professor in Ocean Utilization at MIT, asserts that this discovery could be applied to the human species by aiding future scientists in studying the human microbiome through the lens of how bacteria contributes to preserving its hosts.
