Giraffes have a higher blood pressure because their necks are so long, the heart needs to be stronger to deliver blood. A new genome in giraffes has been discovered, one that lets them live with hypertension. Biologists tried implementing the same genome on mice, and they were also able to live with hypertension. The FGFRL1 giraffe gene serves to counter the negative effects of high blood pressure, so we might be able to utilize this gene for ourselves and help those with blood pressure issues.
