Rolf Mueller, a professor at Virginia Tech, has created a synthetic bat ear device that can determine the origin of any sound it picks up. Mueller was inspired by bats and their echolocation abilities, and focused specifically on the ability of their ears to figure out where a sound is coming from. Mueller applied machine learning to mimic the many layers of processing found in the brain, which helped make his synthetic ear more robust than any previous attempts.
