News, Bioinspired materials from dandelions
A study conducted at the University of Trento has revealed that dandelion clocks submerged in water have air trapping capacities. The discovery was actually inspired by the high-school daughter of professor Nicola Pugno, who noticed that the soft seed heads of dandelions turn silvery and take on a rhombus-like shape when underwater. The team has analyzed the mechanical properties of the flower and is considering how re-engineered models can mimic dandelions, paving the way for new devices that are able to retain air bubbles. One potential application for underwater operations is miniaturized parachute-like elements that transport air bubbles while submerged.
