Robotic architecture inspired by pelican eel: Origami unfolding and skin stretching mechanisms
Many robots’ movements are inspired by patterns of movements observed in animals, such as chemical swelling, skin stretching or origami morphing. Researchers at Seoul National University’s Soft Robotics Research Center have been studying how pelican eel fish inflates its mouth and have analyzed how this behavior could be replicated in robots using a combination of origami unfolding and soft skin stretching techniques. They were able to create a design inspired by the pelican eel that could be used as a basic foundation for other bio-inspired robots to be built upon. They discovered that this robot could perform a wide range of behaviors, including gripping, crawling and underwater motion.
