News, Whose coronavirus strategy worked best? Scientists hunt most effective policies
Researchers are trying to figure out the best way to reduce R, the statistic that informs about the number of people an infected person infects. Since countries like Hong Kong only had 4 deaths out of 7.5 million people, they are trying to determine the various confounding and underlying variables that would lead to the optimal course of action. To do this, they are using a technique involving regression analysis, which estimates the strength of the relationship between a particular measure, such as school closure, and a metric, such as R, across all countries. Using a regression technique such as Lasso, for example, researchers can determine which measures reduce R most.
