Scientists look to synthetic biology and 3-D printing for life support in space
This article focuses on how cells can be replicated using a 3-D printer to better support astronauts time in space, whether that be the moon or something as novel as life on Mars. The article specifies using synthetic biology to produce a “custom ink” so astronauts can print whatever is needed while in flight. This gives them an ability to prepare for the unknown. This process is inspired by organism’s ability to convert sunlight or water into a final product of a plant. Bioengineers plan to reprogram the processes of these organisms by identifying how to edit cells then send this information back to the crew on the ship. This way we can remodel these cycles completed by living organisms in the form of a 3-D printing process.
