When in ground effect, bats are able to fly aerodynamically in a manner that is much more efficient than our own machines. The ripples in the wings themselves allows for significant conservation of energy and could be utilized in many of our own machines as well.
Effects of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy on Major Depressive Disorder
Is psilocybin-assisted therapy efficacious among patients with major depressive disorder? In this randomized clinical trial of 24 participants with major depressive disorder, participants who received immediate psilocybin-assisted therapy compared with delayed treatment showed improvement in blinded clinician rater–assessed depression severity and in self-reported secondary outcomes through the 1-month follow-up. This randomized […]

Tendon injuries disrupt the balance between stability and mobility, causing compromised functions and disabilities. The regeneration of mature, functional tendons remains a clinical challenge. Here, we perform transcriptional profiling of tendon developmental processes to show that the extracellular matrix-associated protein periostin (Postn) contributes to the maintenance of tendon stem/progenitor cell (TSPC) […]
Exploration of the ocean environment has been a long dream of scientists as the vast extent of the ocean holds many things we have yet to discover. The recently developed variants of soft robots may be the key in exploring these secrets. The Squidbot looks and moves just like a squid; […]
Paper, Chiton scale-inspired flexible armor
Chiton scales which are rigid when necessary in order to protect the chiton from attacks or obstacles are also simultaneously able to be flexible, hence making for a great bio-inspired design. In this paper, a design for armor, specifically knee armor, due to […]
An Internet hosting center hosts services on its server ensemble. The center must allocate servers dynamically amongst services to maximize revenue earned from hosting fees. The finite server ensemble, unpredictable request arrival behavior and server reallocation cost make server allocation optimization difficult. Server allocation closely resembles honeybee forager allocation amongst flower patches to optimize nectar […]
As marine systems are facing threats from deep-sea mining projects, oil rigs, and offshore wind farms, roboticists have looked towards the efficient swimming mechanisms of jellyfish to help repair and inspect the undersea environment. Jellyfish’s pulse-jet system allows them to maneuver through water efficiently, and combining this with natural resonant “pushes” has allowed the creation […]
Marine Biologists Discover Novel Filtration System in Giant Manta Rays
While conventional filters sieve out large particles, they are prone to clogging and permit smaller particles to pass through. Researchers at Cal State Fullerton have found a new, highly efficient method of filtration in the mouths of giant manta rays. The giant manta ray instead uses “ricochet separation” to filter even […]
Most exoskeletons have been created using a model based on a fixed- axis rotating hinge, which does not reflect the way human joints rotate and can restrict movements of those wearing them. An alternative model for fabricating exoskeletons to recreate the motion of human joints entails using […]
