Researchers at Harvard are developing bio-inspired neural probes. Current probes are inflexible and foreign to the brain’s environment, so they lead to neuroinflammatory responses, loss of neurons, and measurement instabilities. The researchers developed electronics with a soma, neurite, and thin polymer insulation that acted like a myelin sheath, and joined many of them together in a 3D network. In studies, the researchers found that the artificial neurons were able to structurally and functionally integrate with the biological neurons and glial cells, indicating that they could one day be used as brain-machine interfaces.
