The Biomimicry Institute empowers people to create nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet. The purpose of the Biomimicry Institute is to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design. It was founded in 2006 with the purpose of sharing nature’s design lessons with the people who design and make the world. They started out by working with educators from K-12, university, and non-formal (museums, zoos, aquariums) environments to naturalize biomimicry in the educational system. In 2008, they launched a free, online catalog of nature’s solutions to design challenges. This website, called Ask Nature, has helped students and practitioners around the globe look to nature for sustainable design inspiration and advice. They provide lesson plans, classroom exercises, and educator training courses in the resources section of AskNature.org. It also hosts a Biomimicry Global Design Challenge and Youth Design Challenge to support project-based education; a Biomimicry Launchpad startup accelerator program; a Ray of Hope Prize® for developing companies to bring designs to market; and a Biomimicry Global Network that connects innovators across the world.
