News, Biomimicry comes for the noble Hedgehog
When hedgehogs fall from trees or high surfaces or come in contact with predators they roll into a ball, transforming into a spherical object covered with quills. Researchers at Hedgemon, a company based in Ohio, have been studying this characteristic of hedgehogs to see how they can incorporate it into a bioinspired design. Their invention is a “biomimetic” layer on football helmets. The helmet utilizes synthetic quills, which can absorb and hinder the shock of impact for football players. This will be very useful for preventing traumatic brain injury in football players.
