Paper, Determining Material to Imitate Octopus’s Unique Suction Abilities
The BioRobotics Institute of Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies was founded in 2011. Located in Italy, the institute primarily focuses on areas such as medical robotics, wearable technologies and bio-inspired robotics. As seen in this week’s lecture, there are various applications to Octopus’s unique suction abilities. This research paper attempts to imitate the functionality of the specific muscle bundles which generate suction to obtain adhesion, so as to create Octopus inspired suction cups. Particularly, the paper delves into the different properties required of the material such as good compliance for the integration in a soft structure, capability to work in wet conditions and possibility of miniaturization, and concludes through experimentation that Dielectric Elastomers Actuators (DEA) were a suitable solution.
