Paper, Experimental optimization of wing shape for a hummingbird-like flapping wing micro air vehicle
Biological creatures that can both maneuver and hover such as hummingbirds and bugs serve as inspiration for flapping wing micro air vehicles. This paper sought to find the optimal wing shape for the wings for a flapping wing micro air vehicle the size of a hummingbird. The researchers measured how effective different wing shapes and different angles were, by manufacturing various wings, and measuring their performance. The wings were made to be flexible, out of Mylar foil and CFRP stiffeners. Their results found that the most optimal wing shape was very similar to a real hummingbird wing.
