To better model the structure and performance of human muscles, researchers are using silkworm silk to grow muscle cells aligned in 3-dimensional space. Previously, muscle cells were grown on flat 2D petri dishes, which did not allow muscle cells to align accurately and led to poorer model muscle cell performance. Muscle cells grown on silkworm silk were more flexible and contracted more effectively.
