Administration of drugs by the buccal route has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. But, developing systems with adequate adhesion under wet conditions and drug bioavailability remains a challenge. In this article, they propose a mussel-inspired mucoadhesive film as a solution and demonstrate that the adhesion mechanism of this film relies on both physical association and covalent bonding between the film and mucus.
