Paper, Aerodynamic imaging by mosquitoes inspires a surface detector for autonomous flying vehicles

Nakata et al. show that mosquitos detect surfaces using the flow fields caused by the movement of their own wings, and proposed to use this in the navigation of human-made drones. Small changes in air flows can be detected with sensors and used to navigate drones in tight spaces and cost a lot less than lidar or sonar detections typically used in autonomous autonomous vehicles.
